Response to the WWE Magazine Feature on Wrestling Tumblrs

torukun1:

At least they’re spotlighting the amusing blogs instead of the…creepy buttsex-ridden stan blogs full of Topaz-saturated edits n’ bullshit like that (or role players)

BUT THEY SHOULD SEE WWESEXCONFESSIONS

I agree about the absolute terrible Tumblr blogs run by Mutants of the IWC, but to be honest, the only site highlighted by the WWE that I think is worthwhile is the Where’s Randy Savage? one. It was funny. It was creative. It knew when to pull back before running itself into the ground, and now the person (or people) behind it post one or two photos a month (if any).

People who turn every second of RAW into GIFs are the absolute worst.

Photoshopping head swaps is a half-notch above the GIF people.

When it comes to the fourth site featured, I’m pretty sure the person behind that one bored himself into abandoning the site altogether since the last post is marked April 3rd.

During the break of our fake internet radio show (KGBcast), Kayfabe and I talked about this magazine article, and he didn’t seem to care about it one way or the other. His opinion is that WWE Magazine “is meant for children”, so I shouldn’t be bothered by it, but I am. I like the randomness of this site. I love our inconsistency of regularly scheduled postings. We are nothing more than a disposable blog that’s the Internet equivalent of pasting neat wrestling-related items to the inside of a high school locker, but I believe that we’re one of the more interesting high school lockers on this platform!

I know that posting this is opening Drop Toehold up to attacks and criticism by the Tumblr community (cue a CM Punk head swap of him not being impressed of this site, our podcast, my face, etc…), but this post is not meant to be all about tooting our own horn. Instead, I want to highlight a few wrestling Tumblr blogs that showcase wrestling fans who are “the most passionate and creative in the world” or who just deserve a spotlight on them:

  • We Watch Wrestling - A site that casts a large net into the world of wrestling and is as about as schizophrenic as us when it comes to what is posted. “WWE, TNA, the indies, whatever.” Worth following, even if they might have scaled back their posting recently.
  • WWEMedia - You read the dirtsheets, we all do. Some of us are skeptical of the always-changing backstage scoops, some of us truly believe everything they read on the Internet is true. This Tumblr takes (steals) all of those stories from the other sites, adds a bit of original posts, and presents it at a place that won’t give you a crapton of spyware.
  • Wrestling with Text - The only wrestling GIF site that does it right. It’s not about turning the five-minute CM Punk segment into 175 individual GIFs, it’s about capturing a great moment or even being creatively creepy with your files.
  • Wrestlespective - Another site similar to us that’s more of a collection of wrestling related things, except that it’s run pretty straight. Posts are uniform, clean, and lacking the silliness found here, but it’s pretty damn interesting to go through.
  • Fuck Yeah Wrestling Signs - Screencaps of some of the best and/or creative signs found in the crowd. Worth following because sometimes you miss out on the sign that compares Randy Orton to a “SLIM JIM WITH A FACE”.
  • International Object - For the wrestling fan that doesn’t have the attention span of a coked-up raccoon. Intelligent dissection of the cartoon world of professional wrestling written by someone treats the antics inside of a squared circle as “misunderstood art”.

If you truly believe that pasting CM Punk’s mug onto a random movie poster is more creative than discussing the motivation that drives the John Cena character to be a professional wrestler, then maybe you should stick with the sites that devote entire entries to Brodus Clay dancing GIFs.

Definitely agreed with this.

They’re all much better than this blog, haha.

Question:

Are you happy with the unbroken cycle of WWE programming that we currently have, where there is no off season or break?

Or would you like to see WWE take on the more common model of TV programming and start having a break/off season and every year is broken up into seasons (preferably starting two/3 months after Wrestlemania and then ending with Wrestlemania)?

My view: Personally, I’d like to see WWE adopt a model of breaking up their years into seasons…because it helps the writing staff more than the wrestlers, it gives them time to write without the short timeframe and pressure. It also allows them to plan out storylines better and give us a better payoff when it comes to PPV’s and Wrestlemania itself.

Anyway, would like to hear your opinions

Apparently, this is the ring set up for Wrestlemania 28.

Well, the logo at the top is a dead give away, haha
But it doesn’t look bad and that tent in the middle seems to be the standard set up for any ‘Mania that occurs in an open top arena.

Sometimes I feel like a bad [female] [male] [LGTBQ] wrestling fan…

internationalobject:

And now, the other side of the coin…

“I don’t mind talking outfits, entrances, charisma, or presence, because those all add to wrestling as a performance art. I love talking about moves, matches, and storylines – what worked, what didn’t, and why. However, I don’t want to discuss what they look like and what someone would like to do to them in the bedroom. To me, that’s not what wrestling’s about. “

One of the things we set out to do with this issue is promote the idea that there aren’t male wrestling fans or female wrestling fans. It’s a bullshit illusion fed by people who profit off demographics and stereotypes. Every time we forget that we’re all goddamn individuals with different preferences, those people begin to make money.

Here’s a confession that should be obvious for people who’ve read me a while: I could really care less what happens on wrestling shows week to week. I’m interested in theory, trends, and the tropes of this art form. More than anything, I’m for promoting it as an art form and not a “fake sport.” What actually occurs on the shows are details for me, because my subject is bigger than any episode or live event. My subject is about what the hell wrestling is and what it means to people. I believe with the Fair to Flair Quarterly, we’ve begun to crack that, just a little bit.

This is why KSP is my favourite wrestling blogger/writer

WWE have signed Brodie Lee?!

(I know I avoid dirtsheets most of the time, but I only pay attention when they post stuff like this)

But wow…man if they’ve signed Brodie, he’s got a bright future in WWE because he’s a big motherfucker who can really go, which is what Vince likes.

He HAS to keep the beard though.

And I can’t wait to see this beautiful kick on a weekly basis in WWE:

Poor Zack Ryder: Understanding insider terms and why John Cena isn’t ‘burying’ him

In fact, this version of Cena is one of the best yet. He’s a heel who thinks he’s a babyface because everything he does is in the name of good. But it all always blows up in his face and Ryder is caught in the crossfire. They’re turning him without turning him and making him look like shit for what he did to his friend.
Ryder, of course, being the friend who can barely move because of injuries suffered thanks to, again, Cena. When Ryder finally worked up the courage to confront Cena, it created an atmosphere ripe with tension like we’re not actually used to feeling in WWE anymore.
Even those younger fans who are such a staple at John Cena dominated merchandise stands were subconsciously hoping Ryder would actually do something about what Cena did. When Ryder slapped him, it was a glorious moment. Cena responding by acting as though he would react with force if instigated again was the cherry on top of the entire angle.

There have been some lame parts to this angle (the chase scenes and awkward slow panning to an obvious Zack Ryder), but I like how everyone has been playing their parts well and within character. Nobody’s being hurt in this story except for possibly Kane, who still doesn’t make sense with his “Embrace the Hate” spiel, and maybe Zack if he doesn’t show any fire.
Let Zack tell off Eve, let him be the one to topple the big red monster known as Kane at WrestleMania, and put him back on track to winning back his United States Championship. That’s the ending that needs to be, anyway.

I agree, I think Ryder beating Kane in a triumphant manner at ‘Mania would be the perfect way to put him back on track.
It’d make sense and give them an out for this Kane/Cena feud so they can focus it back on Cena/Rock properly.

The Phenomenal AJ Styles faces the Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels in London

I’ve said this before but Impact (TNA?) needs to leave Florida pronto.

I agree.

But wow, they’re really getting a reaction in the arena aren’t they?

It’s a really out there idea, but it’d be interesting if TNA maybe re-located to the UK, and really branched out here. They’d have a wealth of talent eager to work for them and they could work tremendously well with touring because they’d get people out to see them.

And maybe get a better TV deal and do more live editions of Impact and yeah…I think it’d work for them if they tried.

However, the bigger question is how much of the roster would be willing to re-locate for them? The answer is probably not a lot, sadly.
